The Opportunity Santa Fe AmeriCorps VISTA team participated in the 2017 Hour of Code. They learned the basics of programming as part of a national movement to increase computer programming nationwide for students in a nation where computing jobs are the #1 source of income and there are over half a million open positions.
Hour of Code is an annual opportunity to celebrate National Computer Science Education Week together and introduce community members to the tech industry and the skill of coding. We will be promoting "Summer of Tech" in 2018 to encourage community members of all ages to get involved and consider exploring educational opportunities available this summer. Also on the horizon is the first annual APP Awards and Showcase to be hosted in Santa Fe next November. Meanwhile, we are launching school-based coding pilot programs with middle and high school students in 5 schools this winter, and look forward to expanding the number of schools participating in the fall.
