The Poder Familiar Working Group is up and running! The group meets weekly with the goal of engaging parents and youth to become community leaders. In October, group members discussed the characteristics they desire to see in their children, planned a Día de los Muertos celebration, continued to develop English conversation skills, and began spreading the word about upcoming Abriendo Puertas sessions. The Abriendo Puertas curriculum will begin November 8th at Cesar Chavez Elementary. The curriculum, designed by and for Latino families, offers education, guidance, and support for parenting. A class of mothers completed the course last spring and will help facilitate the upcoming sessions.
I’ve been supporting Poder Familiar as one of my AmeriCorps VISTA roles, and I always look forward to our meetings. Every person who attends is passionate about their family, their culture, and their community. These hardworking parents have a strong desire to learn and to speak up to make changes, and I believe their voices will strengthen our community.
